What is Therapy?

When I get a phone call from someone looking for therapy I almost always get asked what can they expect out of a session. In a world where one in four people have a mental health diagnosis, therapy has become less stigmatized and more and more popular. In this article I want to go over what a person can expect in a session.

Mental health counseling can address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, trauma, grief, and self-esteem. It can help individuals identify and change negative thought patterns, develop healthier coping mechanisms, improve communication skills, and build resilience.

When I first meet with clients I always emphasize the fact that we are a team. It is important in mental health counseling for everyone’s voice to be heard, yours and the providers. Not every therapist is going to be the right fit for you.

It is important to find a provider that you feel comfortable with and can lead you on a path to success. It is important to establish a trusting and collaborative relationship with the counselor, as this can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the counseling process.
